Chapter 19 - The Evidence Speaks

Mason Reed’s testimony tied the pieces together. He had been hired to alter the clinic’s electronic records so that the night doses appeared to have been approved by a physician. Pike paid him through Bell Vale Services. Halden supplied the medication changes. Celeste arranged for Evelyn to be assessed at the right moment and pushed the trust amendment through the system.
Reed had kept the original server logs as insurance. They showed that the medication entries were changed after the doses had been administered. They also showed that Celeste’s assistant had accessed the trust portal from the mansion on the day the forged amendment was uploaded.
The prosecutor filed charges against Pike and Halden and added fraud-related counts to Celeste’s case. The medical board suspended Halden’s license while the investigation continued. Celeste’s attorneys announced that she would cooperate, but she still faced legal consequences for her own actions.
The trust remained frozen until the court hearing. Evelyn testified clearly and calmly. She described the pressure to sign, the changes in her medication, and the fear that she would be sent away if she refused. The independent physician explained the limits of the earlier assessments and why the altered chart could not be relied on.
The proposed amendment was rejected. The forged agreement was set aside pending the criminal case, and an independent fiduciary was appointed temporarily to oversee the trust.
Naomi thought about the first day she had entered the house, proud to have found steady work. Then she thought about the day Celeste had ordered security to throw her out.
“Especially me.”

Then Evelyn reached for Naomi’s hand.
“There is one more thing you should know,” she said. “The reason Celeste chose that room was not an accident.”
