Chapter 3 - A Bottle Without a Label

Naomi returned after dark through the staff entrance, using the key she had forgotten to turn in. She told herself she was only checking whether Evelyn was safe. She would leave the moment she saw the old woman resting.
Evelyn was sitting upright in bed, wrapped in a blue cardigan. Her face brightened when Naomi entered, then crumpled with relief.
“I thought she’d taken your phone, too,” Evelyn whispered.
“I did. I hid an old phone in the drawer. Celeste doesn’t know about it.”
Naomi checked the hallway before closing the door. “What’s in the bottle?”
“My medicine, I think. But the pills changed. I used to take one in the morning. Now she gives me two at night, and I wake up unable to remember what I said.”
“He believes I’m grieving my husband and losing my mind. Celeste tells him I imagine things.” Evelyn gripped Naomi’s hand. “She says I signed papers giving her control of the trust. I never signed them.”
Naomi examined the bottle. The label had been peeled away cleanly, leaving only a strip of glue. The pills were different sizes and colors from the ones in Evelyn’s weekly organizer.
“I tried to refuse. Celeste said she would have me moved to a care facility where no one would visit.”
Naomi slid the bottle into her apron pocket. The bedroom door opened, and Celeste appeared in a silk robe, holding a glass of water.
Celeste stepped inside and looked at Evelyn. “Did you ask her to come?”
Before Naomi could move, Celeste grabbed the pocket and pulled the bottle free. She held it up between two fingers, then walked to the bathroom and dropped it into the toilet.
“There,” Celeste said. “Now there’s nothing for you to steal.”
Celeste leaned close. “Tomorrow, a doctor is coming to assess Evelyn. You will not be here to confuse her.”
“Security? Please escort this woman off the property.”
