Chapter 8 - A Nurse With a Conscience

The nurse’s name was Tessa Morgan. She agreed to meet Naomi and Adrian at a coffee shop two miles from the clinic, far enough away that no one would see them leaving together.
“I’m not saying someone deliberately harmed Mrs. Vale,” Tessa began. “I’m saying the chart has been changed, and the changes were not entered by the nurse who administered the doses.”
“Who entered them?” Adrian asked.
“Dr. Halden’s office. The system shows a late-night override under his credentials.”
Naomi slid the photographed notebook across the table. Tessa studied the dates, then matched them to the medication chart.
Adrian looked sick. “Why didn’t you report it?”
“I did. My supervisor told me to stop asking questions because the family had requested privacy.” Tessa’s voice shook. “I have rent to pay. I was scared.”
Naomi reached across the table. “You’re telling us now. That matters.”
Tessa gave them a copy of the clinic’s medication discrepancy report. She had saved it before the file was locked. She also told them that a man from Celeste’s office had visited the records department the previous afternoon and asked for all notes about Evelyn’s memory and decision-making.
“Graham Pike. He said he was a legal consultant.”
Adrian knew the name. Pike worked for the firm handling the Vale trust.
Marisol Grant filed the discrepancy report with the state medical board and requested an emergency independent assessment of Evelyn. Adrian also contacted the trust administrator, insisting that no amendment be processed until the circumstances were reviewed.
“And I’m going to be your wife. You need to decide whether you trust me.”
Adrian looked at Naomi, who sat across the room listening without a word.
A photograph showed Evelyn being wheeled toward a side exit of the clinic.
