Chapter 11 - THE HEARING

The judge allowed Genevieve to appear by secure video from the hospital.
Julian sat in court beside Eleanor, both dressed in dark colors that made them look solemn and respectable.
Genevieve almost admired the performance.
Almost.
Julian’s attorney spoke first.
“My client is not seeking to punish his wife. He is seeking stability for his newborn daughter while Mrs. Vale recovers from a severe medical and psychiatric crisis.”
Psychiatric.
There it was again.
Screenshots were displayed.
The fake messages.
Statements from a private psychiatrist Genevieve had never met.
A declaration from Eleanor describing “episodes of rage.”
Then Sarah stood.
“Your Honor, may we begin with what happened yesterday in Mrs. Vale’s hospital room?”
The recording played.
Eleanor’s voice filled the courtroom.
Who will believe a paralyzed woman?
Then Julian:
Sign it. Or we declare you incompetent.
The judge’s face changed.
Julian’s attorney objected.
Sarah did not blink.
“We also have a forged power of attorney, a fraudulent transfer order, falsified text messages, an unauthorized sedative, and financial records showing eighteen million dollars moved through companies controlled by Mr. Vale.”
Julian leaned toward his lawyer.
For the first time, he looked less like a grieving husband and more like a cornered man.
Sarah introduced the Wi-Fi forensic report.
Then Naomi appeared by remote video from a protected location.
She testified that Julian had given her Genevieve’s identification and instructed her to collect medication.
Eleanor whispered something to Julian.
The judge ordered temporary sole custody of Nora to Genevieve and barred Julian and Eleanor from contact pending investigation.
Genevieve shut her eyes.
She wanted to cry.
Then the court clerk interrupted.
“There’s an issue with the child’s location.”
Genevieve opened her eyes.
Sarah turned sharply.
