Chapter 18 - THE LAST THING HE ASKED

Genevieve almost refused.

Then she thought about eleven years of marriage and decided she wanted the ending to have a face.

Julian sat behind glass in a gray jail uniform.

He looked smaller without tailored suits and assistants opening doors.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Genevieve picked up the phone.

“No. You’re caught.”

He closed his eyes.

“I loved you.”

“You loved what being married to me gave you.”

“That isn’t fair.”

She stared at him.

He laughed bitterly. “There she is.”

“Who?”

“The Genevieve your father raised. The one who always has an answer.”

“You spent years trying to make me doubt that woman.”

Julian looked down.

“I didn’t mean for you to be paralyzed.”

“But you meant to drug me.”

“Yes.”

“You meant to forge my name.”

“Yes.”

“You meant to take Nora.”

His silence lasted too long.

Genevieve gripped the phone.

“You meant to take my daughter.”

“My mother said it would only be temporary.”

Genevieve laughed softly.

“You still call it her plan.”

Julian’s eyes filled.

“I was weak.”

“No. Weakness is needing help to stand. What you did required planning.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said, “There’s one account they haven’t found.”

Genevieve said nothing.

“Six million. Cayman trust. My mother can still reach it through a proxy.”

“Why tell me?”

“Because I want you to make sure Nora gets what should have been hers.”

Genevieve’s voice turned cold.

“Nora was never supposed to inherit your stolen money.”

She hung up.

As she turned to leave, Julian tapped the glass.

She almost kept going.

Then he held up a note.
