Chapter 16 - THE ARTHUR FILE

Marcus refused to speak.

His burner phone did not.

Digital forensics recovered photographs, payment records, and voice notes.

The Arthur file contained a recording from the marina.

Marcus had made it for insurance against Eleanor.

Arthur’s voice was clear.

“You touch my daughter’s trust again and I go to the FBI.”

Then Eleanor’s voice came through a speakerphone.

“You’re being dramatic.”

“I’m being a father.”

“You’re standing in the way of a family that has more power than you understand.”

Arthur laughed.

“You think power means people are afraid to say no to you.”

A pause.

Then Eleanor said, “Sometimes it does.”

The recording ended before Arthur’s death, but the next file was worse.

Marcus speaking to Julian.

“The switch is done. If he hits rough water, he won’t have time.”

Julian’s answer was barely audible.

“My mother said scare him.”

Marcus laughed.

“Then tell your mother storms don’t scare rich old men.”

Genevieve listened once.

Only once.

Afterward she asked Sarah to turn it off.

“That’s enough.”

Ortiz said the evidence would support new charges.

Julian’s cooperation would not save him.

Eleanor’s kidnapping attempt, the forged documents, and the financial scheme were already enough to keep prosecutors busy for years.

But Genevieve wanted one more thing.

“My father was trying to protect me,” she said.

Sarah nodded.

“And I treated his warnings like control.”

“You loved your husband.”

“I trusted the wrong man.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

Darnell arrived for therapy.

Genevieve almost sent him away.

Then she looked at Nora sleeping against Sarah’s shoulder.

“Set up the bars.”

She stood for thirty-eight seconds that day.

The next morning she stood for fifty-two.

On the third day, she took one step.

Sarah clapped a hand over her mouth.

Genevieve smiled.

Then Ortiz entered with a sealed envelope.

“Eleanor made a deal offer.”

May you like

Genevieve’s smile vanished.

“She’ll confess to the financial crimes,” Ortiz said, “if you agree not to testify about the hospital.”
