Chapter 15 - DARKNESS

Emergency lights came on red.
Nora screamed.
Sarah grabbed the bassinet while Tessa hit the call button.
Nothing happened.
Genevieve heard the lock click.
The door opened.
A man stepped inside wearing maintenance clothes.
Marcus Lyle.
He held a gun low against his thigh.
“Phone on the floor,” he said.
Sarah did not move.
“Now.”
She dropped it.
Marcus kicked it beneath the bed.
Genevieve’s heart hammered, but her mind became strangely clear.
He believed she could not move.
That mattered.
Marcus crossed to the bassinet.
Genevieve’s hand tightened around the wheelchair arm.
“What do you want?”
“The drive Naomi copied.”
“Police have it.”
“Then I need something else.”
He looked at Nora.
Genevieve’s fear became rage.
“No.”
Marcus smiled. “That’s the problem with mothers. They always think no before they think price.”
Sarah stepped between him and the baby.
Marcus raised the gun.
Genevieve moved.
Not much.
Enough.
She pushed both feet against the floor and launched the wheelchair forward.
The chair slammed into Marcus’s knees.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Sarah grabbed Nora.
Tessa threw a metal tray.
Marcus struck Genevieve across the face and stumbled toward the door.
Genevieve caught his jacket.
For one second, her useless hand became a fist.
He dragged her halfway out of the wheelchair.
Then security hit him from the side.
Three officers drove Marcus to the floor.
Ortiz arrived seconds later.
Marcus was handcuffed, bleeding from the mouth and laughing.
“You think this ends with me?” he said.
Ortiz searched his pockets.
She found a burner phone.
One message had been sent five minutes earlier.
IF I DON’T CALL BACK, RELEASE ARTHUR FILE.
