Chapter 2 - THE PAPER WITH HER NAME

Julian recovered first.

“This is a family matter.”

Sarah glanced at the security officers. “Not anymore.”

Eleanor stepped forward. “You have no authority here.”

“I’m Genevieve’s attorney.”

“She doesn’t have an attorney.”

Genevieve swallowed. “I hired her two weeks ago.”

Julian stared at her.

That was the first moment Genevieve understood something important: he had not expected resistance because he had stopped seeing her as a person with plans of her own.

Security moved Nora’s bassinet back beside the bed. A nurse rushed in, lifted the baby, and placed her carefully against Genevieve’s side.

Genevieve could not raise her arms, so the nurse supported Nora with rolled blankets.

The baby’s crying softened.

Genevieve nearly broke.

Julian pointed at Sarah. “She’s manipulating my wife while she’s medicated.”

Sarah opened her leather folder. “Then you’ll enjoy explaining why your wife’s signature appears on a power of attorney executed yesterday at 3:40 p.m.”

Genevieve frowned. “I was unconscious yesterday.”

“I know.”

Sarah slid a copy onto the bedside table.

Genevieve recognized her name immediately.

The signature looked perfect.

Too perfect.

Julian said nothing.

Sarah continued. “The document gives Julian control of your personal trust, your voting shares, your medical decisions, and any decisions involving Nora if you are declared incapacitated.”

Eleanor folded her arms. “That was Genevieve’s choice.”

Genevieve forced herself to look at her mother-in-law. “I’ve never seen that document.”

Sarah tapped the bottom of the page.

“There’s more. It was notarized inside this hospital.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“By whom?” Genevieve asked.

Sarah turned the paper.

A name was stamped beneath the forged signature.

MARCUS LYLE — NOTARY PUBLIC.

Genevieve knew the name.

Marcus was not a hospital employee.

He was Julian’s private driver.

Before anyone could speak, Sarah’s phone buzzed.

She read the message once, then again.

“What?” Genevieve asked.

Sarah looked toward the door.

“Hospital security just checked the camera outside your room.”

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

May you like

Sarah lowered her voice.

“Forty-one minutes of footage from yesterday are missing.”
