Chapter 11 - Smoke

The sprinklers saved most of the floor.

They did not save the paper files.

The fire department called it suspicious before sunset.

A camera in the hallway had captured a man entering the records room forty minutes before the alarm.

He wore a maintenance jacket and a baseball cap.

The badge reader identified him as Peter Haines, a contractor who had been fired six months earlier.

Peter was arrested the next morning.

He refused to say who hired him.

Julian called the fire “an unfortunate coincidence.”

I called it exactly what it looked like.

At the next board meeting, I asked one question.

“Who benefits if old audits disappear?”

Nobody answered.

Julian leaned back. “Careful, Lucia. Accusations have consequences.”

“So does arson.”

Victoria looked at her son. “Did you know that man?”

“No.”

Claudia said, “Dad wouldn’t do this.”

I watched her face.

She believed him.

After the meeting, Claudia followed me into the elevator.

“You’re turning everyone against him.”

“I’m asking questions.”

“You came here and everything broke.”

“No. I came here and people started looking at the cracks.”

She stared at the floor numbers.

“I hate you.”

“I know.”

The elevator opened.

She did not move.

Then she said something quieter.

“He has been moving money.”

I turned.

She looked terrified now.

“What money?”

“I don’t know. I saw transfers on his laptop. He told me they were tax planning.”

“Why tell me?”

“Because the account name was Isabel Holdings.”

My pulse jumped.

Mr. Bell found it within two hours.

Isabel Holdings LLC had been formed nine years earlier—the same month Daniel Price was told to stop looking for my mother.

It held seventeen million dollars in assets.

The listed manager was Julian.

The initial funding source was the family account where Isabel’s original trust should have remained.

Victoria sat in silence while Mr. Bell explained it.

Then she looked at me.

“I spent years afraid you would take something from us.”

Her voice cracked.

“All this time, my son already had.”

Before I could answer, Mr. Bell’s assistant rushed in.

“Julian just filed an emergency petition.”

“For what?”

“To block Lucia’s inheritance on grounds of fraud.”

She handed me the filing.

Attached was a sworn affidavit.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Daniel Price.
