Chapter 2 - Isabel's Eyes

I had heard those words before.

Three months earlier, Evelyn had stopped me in the upstairs hall and stared at the blue pendant hanging from my neck.

“Where did you get that?”

“My mother.”

Her fingers had trembled when she touched the stone.

Victoria pulled her away and blamed her medication.

Now Evelyn was staring at the same pendant across a table full of people who suddenly looked at me as if I had changed species.

“Turn it over,” she said.

I did.

Three scratches on the back formed something close to an I.

Mr. Bell opened another envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a young woman laughing beside a garden wall.

She wore my pendant.

I forgot the room for a second.

“My mother told me it came from her mother,” I said. “That’s all she knew.”

Evelyn pressed a hand to her mouth.

“Isabel.”

Victoria snatched the photograph.

Her fingers shook.

Claudia saw it too.

“Grandma?”

Victoria said nothing.

Mr. Bell explained the family history slowly. Isabel Montenegro had disappeared twenty-four years before my mother was born. She had become pregnant by a man the family patriarch considered unacceptable. Everyone was told that Isabel and her baby died.

Isabel did die young.

The baby did not.

The infant was placed with another family through a private adoption.

That child became Elena Alvarez.

My mother.

I sat down without remembering the decision to sit.

“My mother spent her whole life thinking she had no family.”

Mr. Bell’s voice softened. “We believe she truly did not know.”

Victoria found her voice again.

“You cannot establish this because a servant cut her hand.”

“No,” Mr. Bell said. “Which is why we didn’t.”

He placed a second report on the table.

“With Lucia’s written consent, the lab compared her sample with a preserved medical sample from Rafael. The probability of a close biological relationship exceeds 99.8 percent.”

I remembered signing forms after slicing my palm on a cracked serving dish.

I had been told some of the paperwork involved medical verification. I had initialed a separate consent form I barely read because my hand was throbbing.

Mr. Bell pushed a copy toward me.

There was my signature.

My head felt light.

Claudia stared at me. “So what? She’s some distant cousin?”

Mr. Bell closed the DNA folder.

“No.”

Then he opened Rafael’s will.

“And that is where tonight becomes complicated.”
