Chapter 14 - What the Audit Found

The forensic team needed six days to find the first criminal problem.
They needed three more to find twelve.
Money from Isabel’s trust had been routed through shell companies, then used as collateral for Julian’s real-estate projects.
Employee benefit reserves had been borrowed and quietly replaced with company IOUs.
A charitable foundation paid consulting fees to businesses connected to two board members.
One message from Julian to the finance chief read:
Keep the Alvarez issue buried until after the Harbor refinancing.
Another said:
If Rafael finds the girl, we lose leverage.
The girl.
Me.
Not a niece. Not a person. A financial event.
The board suspended Julian pending investigation.
He resigned before they could vote.
Then he disappeared.
Not internationally.
Just from everyone’s phones.
Claudia stopped coming to meetings.
Victoria stopped sleeping.
“You may soon control a major company,” one shouted outside campus. “Why are you still taking exams?”
“Because I have one Friday.”
Rosa from payroll called me that evening.
She sounded nervous.
“There’s something you should see.”
We met at a coffee shop nowhere near headquarters.
She handed me a folder of old employee complaints.
Several had reported retaliation after raising concerns about benefit cuts.
Some were demoted.
One was fired.
All were approved by Julian’s office.
At the bottom was a handwritten note from Rafael.
If Lucia is ever found, show her this first. Not the balance sheet.
I read it twice.
“Why did he write that?”
Rosa’s eyes filled.
“Because he knew what the company had become.”
She told me Rafael had tried to restore the employee funds before his health failed. Julian blocked him by arguing the company needed liquidity.
Rafael began documenting everything.
“Where are those records?”
Rosa hesitated.
“Not at headquarters.”
She gave me an address.
An old Montenegro warehouse in Quincy.
Mr. Bell insisted on coming.
So did Victoria.
Inside the warehouse, behind a locked office, we found twenty banker’s boxes labeled with dates.
The last box contained a sealed envelope with my name.
I opened it.
Inside was one sheet of paper.
Lucia - if you are reading this, do not save the family name. Save the people who had to work under it.
May you like
Behind us, something crashed in the dark warehouse.
Then the lights went out.
