Chapter 3 - The Clause

Mr. Bell asked most of the family to leave.

Nobody wanted to.

Victoria ordered them out.

That worked.

Soon only Victoria, Claudia, Evelyn, Mr. Bell, and I remained beneath the chandelier.

The abandoned desserts looked strange on the table, half-eaten and suddenly irrelevant.

Mr. Bell read the clause aloud.

If a living descendant of Isabel Montenegro could be conclusively identified, that descendant would receive Rafael’s controlling interest in Montenegro Holdings and the trust formed from Isabel’s original family share.

Not everything.

But the largest individual share.

Claudia blinked. “You’re saying she controls the company?”

“I’m saying the transfer process begins now.”

Victoria gripped the back of her chair.

“Rafael would have told me.”

Evelyn laughed without humor.

“He tried.”

Victoria turned.

Evelyn folded her napkin. “Your father lied about Isabel’s baby. Rafael learned the truth years later. He searched quietly because he was ashamed he had believed the family story for so long.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You knew later.”

Silence landed hard.

I looked at Victoria.

She looked at my pendant, then away.

Evelyn pointed at it. “You recognized that necklace the week Lucia started working here.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

My chest tightened.

Until that second, I thought she was terrified because I had suddenly become family.

Now I understood she had been terrified because she had suspected it already.

“How long?” I asked.

Victoria pressed both palms against the table.

“I didn’t know who you were.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

Claudia stood. “This is insane. She poured coffee for us yesterday.”

Mr. Bell looked at her. “Her occupation does not alter her ancestry.”

Claudia turned on me.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You came here deliberately.”

“I answered an online job listing.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

I almost snapped back.

Instead, I thought of the hundreds of plates I had cleared while Claudia spoke around me as if I were furniture.

“You believed I was too insignificant to have a plan until twenty minutes ago.”

Her face flushed.

Mr. Bell cleared his throat.

“There is another matter.”

Of course there was.

He removed a red file from his case.

“Rafael anticipated a challenge to this clause.”

Victoria’s eyes sharpened.

“So he left instructions.”

Mr. Bell looked at me.

“For the next ninety days, no controlling shares may be transferred, pledged, or voted without temporary court supervision.”

Claudia exhaled in relief.

May you like

Then Mr. Bell finished.

“And tomorrow morning, Lucia must decide whether she intends to claim them.”
