Chapter 9 - Box B-114

The bank would not open the box for me without a court order.
Mr. Bell got one by Friday.
Victoria came with us.
Julian tried to.
The judge said no.
Inside box B-114 sat three envelopes, a flash drive, and a child’s hospital bracelet wrapped in tissue paper.
The bracelet read BABY GIRL - ISABEL M.
I had to look away.
Victoria did not.
She touched the tissue with one finger and whispered, “Father told us the baby died before they could name her.”
Mr. Bell opened the first envelope.
Rafael had written it seven years earlier.
If this box is opened because Lucia Alvarez has been found, give her the enclosed records before anyone asks her to sign anything.
My knees nearly gave out.
He knew my name.
Years before I entered that house.
The second envelope contained correspondence with Daniel Price proving Rafael had located my mother.
The third contained copies of wire transfers.
Large ones.
From a private Montenegro family account to a consulting company controlled by Julian.
The dates matched the period when the search for my mother abruptly ended.
Victoria turned pale.
“What is that?”
Mr. Bell read the memo line.
“Family risk management.”
I looked at her.
“Did you approve those?”
“No.”
“You were trustee.”
“I signed hundreds of things Julian brought me.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
She swallowed.
“I may have signed them.”
The flash drive held scanned letters.
One was from my mother.
She had written Rafael back after all.
She apologized for refusing his first contact and asked for proof that he really knew Isabel.
Rafael had sent a photograph of the pendant and described a lullaby Isabel used to sing.
My mother wrote one final letter.
I believe you. I’m scared. Give me time.
There was no evidence she ever received another response.
I cried in the bank vault with fluorescent lights buzzing over my head.
Victoria stood beside me and said nothing.
Then Mr. Bell opened a file on the drive labeled IF ELENA IS GONE.
It was a video.
Rafael appeared older, thinner, sitting behind his desk.
“If Elena is gone and Lucia is watching this,” he began, “then I failed both of you.”
May you like
He looked directly into the camera.
“And if Julian still controls the company when you see this, do not sign anything he puts in front of you.”
