The second day after the wedding, during dinner at my husband's house.

Just because I didn't serve rice to my brother-in-law, who was playing video games, the husband I had loved for three years, who had just married me, slapped me in front of the whole family.

He didn't expect me to hesitate for a second. I immediately took my own plate, served myself, and said calmly, "He has hands and feet."

The atmosphere froze immediately.

Mateo looked up, staring at me in shock: "Sister-in-law, what just happened?"

I kept my calm: "I told you to serve yourself."

"What?!" —He slammed the phone against the table.

Rosa pointed at my face, furious, and shouted: "Diego! Look at the kind of woman you brought home! It's the first day and you already want to impose your rules on the Vargas family!"

I looked at my husband. He furrowed his brow, with a look full of discomfort. He put down his dishes, tried to calm his mother, and then turned to me, begging in a low voice: "Elena, don't be like that. Mom is watching us. Serve a plate to Mateo, it's not that big of a deal."
I looked at her and replied firmly: "It's not about serving food. It's a matter of principles."

Rosa slammed the table down and stood up from her seat: "What principles! In the Vargas family, women must serve men! If you got married and came here, you have to follow our rules!"

Diego's face darkened. He probably felt like I was making him lose face in front of his entire family. Suddenly, he jumped up and grabbed my wrist tightly, squeezing until it hurt: "Elena, I told you to go!"

I looked at her face, distorted by the man's anger, and my heart froze. I let out a loud "Eaaaah!"

A deafening slap landed directly on my face. My head spun, my ears rang, and a burning sensation spread across half of my face. The whole world seemed to stop.

I heard Mateo's mocking laughter and Rosa's cold, satisfied laugh.

I slowly turned my head to look at Diego. He too seemed stunned by his own actions; his hand was still in the air, and his eyes showed a mix of panic and stubbornness, as if trying to justify himself: "I did it for your own good."

"Elena, I..." —he tried to explain. But I didn't give him the chance.

I wasn't angry, I just felt an intense chill run down my entire body. Without a second's hesitation, I lifted the spicy, steaming bowl from the center of the table and poured it directly onto the man who had just slapped me, with broth, fish, and everything else.

"Aaaaah!"

Diego's cry of pain echoed through the room. The hot oil and red broth dripped down his face; pieces of fish and vegetables stuck to his eyebrows and neck. He covered his face, jumping in pain.

"My God! You're a murderer!" —Rosa screamed like a madwoman, rushing at me to hit me.
I didn't move at all. I turned around, grabbed a bowl of empty ceramic from the table, and with all my strength, I slammed it to the floor.

Crash! —The sound of the ceramic shattering was deafening, and the shards flew in all directions.

Rosa stopped dead in her tracks, staring at me in horror, and then looked down at the broken pieces.

I picked up my suitcase and began packing.

The living room fell into complete silence.

Diego continued to groan; he tried to wipe his eyes with his hands, but they were greasy, giving him a pathetic look.

Rosa and Mateo were frozen in place, like two statues. In their eyes, there was no longer any contempt or arrogance, only pure terror.

They probably never imagined that the woman who had worn a radiant wedding dress yesterday would become someone capable of using a "haunted house" to threaten her entire family.

I closed the door and stepped over the chaos on the floor and returned coldly to the bridal suite.

Pum! —The sound of the slam was sharp, completely isolating me from the outside world.

In the room, the wedding decorations were still there, the bed covered with impeccable sheets; everything kept the look of a recent wedding. Now, looking at her, I only felt irony and bitterness.

I didn't cry, didn't shed a single tear.

That slap didn't just hit me in the face, but shattered three years of love, a wedding, and all my beautiful fantasies about the future.

I approached the closet, took out my suitcase, and began to pack my things.

One by one: clothes, cosmetics, jewelry, books... everything that belonged to me, leaving nothing behind.

Outside, finally, there was noise. Rosa screamed like a madwoman: "Elena! Damn crazy woman! Get out of here! You left my son in this state, I'll make you pay with your life!"

Immediately after, a "pum, pum, pum!" sound rang out, slamming the door with fury.

"Open the door! Elena, open the door! If you had the guts to throw the soup on me, have the guts to open the door!" —Diego's voice echoed, full of anger and pain.

I didn't pay attention and continued packing.

My movements were very calm, even a bit slow.
There was a total emptiness in my head... or maybe it was a terrifying clarity.

I knew everything was over.

From the moment he raised his hand to slap me, everything had come to an end.

"Stepmother, open the door! My brother can't even open his eyes! Get out and take him to the hospital first!" —Mateo was also shouting from outside, his voice trembling, not knowing if it was out of fear of me or out of fear that something would really happen to his brother.

Take him to the hospital?
