Chapter 17 - VICTOR COMES BACK

Victor had not disappeared because he was running from us.

He was running from Rosa.

The text changed everything.

I did not attend.

I had learned that courage did not mean standing in every dangerous room.

Sometimes courage meant letting trained people do their jobs.

What came out afterward was enough.

Among the files was a voice memo from Rosa.

“Diego will get her signature,” she said. “He always gets soft women to forgive him.”

Another message came from Diego.

“I’m not putting a baby into this. Find another way.”

It did not absolve him.

But it confirmed something important: there had been moments when he knew the line existed.

He simply crossed other lines instead.

Victor also produced a spreadsheet titled EXIT OPTIONS.

My name appeared at the top.

Option A: voluntary guarantee.

Option B: marital settlement.

Option C: disputed deed / leverage.

Option D: public instability narrative.

I read the last line until I felt numb.

My life had been reduced to options in somebody else’s spreadsheet.

Nadia closed the file.

“This is over,” she said.

“No,” I answered. “It’s documented.”

That was different.

Over would come later.

Then Diego asked me for one final meeting.

I almost refused.

Nadia said, “You don’t owe him closure.”

“I know.”

But I wanted something else.

I wanted to see if he could finally tell the truth without asking me to save him.

We met in a quiet café.

He sat down across from me and slid his wedding ring onto the table.

Then he said, “There is one thing you still don’t know.”
