Chapter 15 - THE SIGNATURE THAT SAVED ME

Victor thought the forged guarantee would trap me.

Instead, the timing destroyed him.

At 10:12 a.m., when the document claimed I stood before him and signed, I was visible on courthouse security cameras beside Nadia, Diego, three attorneys, and a court clerk.

It was impossible for me to have signed in Victor’s office.

The lender froze the application.

The county flagged the deed.

Mateo, suddenly terrified, decided loyalty had limits.

He called Diego.

Diego called Nadia.

By evening, Mateo was willing to talk through counsel.

His story was ugly.

Rosa owed more than two hundred thousand dollars after guaranteeing debts for Vargas Automotive. Mateo owed another eighty thousand from bad investments and high-interest personal loans. Victor had promised to package everything into one refinancing deal.

Then Rosa learned about my land.

According to Mateo, she had said, “If Elena becomes family, the land becomes reachable.”

Diego had resisted at first.

Then he convinced himself it was only paperwork.

I listened without interrupting.

Finally I asked, “Whose idea was the dinner?”

Mateo looked at the floor.

“Mom’s.”

“To make me angry?”

“She said you needed to understand the family hierarchy.”

“Did she tell Diego to hit me?”

“No. I swear.”

“Did she want a fight?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

The word made my skin crawl.

Mateo continued. “Victor said emotional instability could help pressure you into settling fast if things went wrong.”

Nadia stopped him. “Pressure her how?”

Mateo swallowed.

“By threatening to challenge the prenup and go after the company.”

I looked at Diego, who had joined remotely with his attorney.

His face was wet with tears.

Then Mateo said something none of us expected.

“There was another plan.”

“What plan?” I asked.

May you like

He looked straight at me.

“If you refused the loan, Diego was supposed to get you pregnant.”
