Chapter 5 - THE VIDEO

By noon, Rosa had made the story public.
Her caption read: TWO DAYS AFTER MARRYING MY SON, HIS WIFE ATTACKED HIM DURING DINNER. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR FAMILY.
The comments exploded.
Monster.
Gold digger.
Crazy woman.
Diego’s cousin wrote, “We warned him.”
I felt sick.
Nadia did not.
“Good,” she said.
“Good?”
“They went public first. That means they locked themselves into a story.”
I wanted to respond. She stopped me.
“Not yet.”
Instead, we went to my office.
My operations manager, Tasha, met us at the door.
“You look like you need coffee and a felony report,” she said.
“Both.”
We checked the document server. Someone had accessed a folder containing insurance schedules, equipment lists, and signed vendor agreements six times during the month before my wedding.
The log-in credentials belonged to me.
But the access had happened at 2:11 a.m., 1:46 a.m., and 3:03 a.m.
Times when I had been asleep beside Diego.
Tasha stared at the screen. “He used your laptop.”
I remembered waking once and finding him in the kitchen. He said he could not sleep.
Nadia requested the building’s security logs.
Then Tasha hesitated.
“There’s something else.”
She pulled a small padded envelope from her desk.
“This arrived yesterday. I assumed you ordered it.”
Inside was a new company debit card.
Name: DIEGO VARGAS.
My stomach turned.
I had not requested it.
The bank had mailed it to the office because that was the company’s registered address.
If it had gone to the house, I never would have seen it.
Then Tasha’s phone chimed.
She looked at the screen and frowned.
“Uh… Elena?”
“What?”
“Mateo just went live.”
She turned the phone around.
May you like
Mateo was standing outside my office building.
And behind him were Rosa and Diego.
