Chapter 18 - WHY HE MARRIED ME

I did not touch the ring.

“What don’t I know?”

Diego stared at his coffee.

“The first time Mom told me about your land, I told her to go to hell.”

“That is supposed to comfort me?”

“No.”

He breathed slowly.

“I proposed because I loved you. I swear that part was real.”

I waited.

“But after you said yes, Uncle Luis’s business started collapsing. Mom panicked. Victor came in. Every week there was another problem. Another debt. Another threat.”

“And you chose them.”

“I chose cowardice.”

That was the first honest sentence he had given me without decoration.

He looked up.

“I thought I could marry you, keep you happy, quietly solve their mess, and then never tell you.”

“That is not love.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

He flinched.

“Yes.”

The café was silent around us.

He continued. “The slap… there’s no excuse. I saw Mom looking at me like I was weak. Mateo was laughing. You said no, and instead of being your husband, I became my father.”

“I hated him for hitting Mom,” Diego said. “Then I did the same thing.”

I felt tears rise, but not because I wanted him back.

Because I could see the tragedy clearly now.

People can hate what hurt them and still repeat it if they never learn another way to be.

Diego slid the ring closer to himself again.

“I’m going to accept the settlement Nadia proposed. I’m withdrawing every claim to your land and company. I’ll testify about Victor and the documents.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t undo what I did. But I can stop making you fight me for things that were never mine.”

I nodded.

That was not redemption.

But it was responsibility.

When I stood to leave, Diego said my name.

I turned.

“I really did love you.”

“I know,” I said.

His face broke.

Then I added, “That’s what makes this so sad.”

Outside, Nadia was waiting in her car.

I got in.

She handed me an envelope.

“The lender called,” she said. “They found where the forty-eight thousand was supposed to go after Vargas Family Holdings.”

I opened the paper.

The final destination was not Rosa’s debt.

It was an account in Mateo’s name.
