Chapter 10 - THE CLOSED HOSPITAL

The old hospital looked dead from the road.
Inside, six rooms had power.
Federal agents entered through the rear.
Emily followed the child-recovery team.
They found three children.
All alive.
All registered under false names.
Two were runaways from guardianship cases.
One was a fourteen-year-old boy whose grandmother had been told he was in a treatment center in Kentucky.
No Judge Reed.
No Hale.
Hale was already in custody.
So who had been using the building?
In the basement, agents found a server rack.
Hundreds of files.
Family wealth estimates.
Medical vulnerabilities.
Custody histories.
Judges.
Doctors.
Placement options.
A private market built around children with money.
Sarah stood outside with Ethan and Lucy, refusing to let them see.
Good.
Not every truth belonged in a child's eyes.
Then investigators found Daniel's name in the database.
STATUS: TERMINATED RISK.
Sarah stopped breathing when Emily told her.
Below it:
SURVIVING SPOUSE: SARAH GRANT.
VULNERABILITY: GRIEF / ISOLATION.
CHILDREN: HIGH-VALUE TRUST.
RECRUITER ASSIGNED: R. BENNETT.
Ryan had entered her life according to a spreadsheet.
Not fate.
Not chance.
A work assignment.
Then another file opened.
LUCY GRANT.
A note from two months earlier:
Subject observed near basement access. Possible memory issue.
Emily frowned.
"Memory issue?"
Sarah knew.
Ryan had begun telling her Lucy had nightmares and confused dreams.
He wanted Dr. Hale to evaluate her.
If Lucy had revealed the hidden room, Hale planned to call it fantasy.
Then Collins found a live security feed.
Judge Reed was on camera.
Not at the hospital.
At Sarah's house.
May you like
He had returned to the hidden room.
And he was carrying a gas can.
