Chapter 12 - DANIEL'S GRAVE

They went at sunrise.

Sarah stood between Ethan and Lucy at the cemetery.

Emily kept the children away from the excavation, so Ethan waited near the chapel with Sarah.

Investigators opened a sealed memorial box behind Daniel's headstone.

Inside was a waterproof pouch.

One ledger.

One flash drive.

One letter.

Sarah read the letter first.

Daniel apologized for building the software Reed abused.

He apologized for not telling Sarah sooner.

Then:

Do not let my guilt become Ethan's inheritance.

Sarah cried.

Ethan asked, "Was Dad bad?"

Sarah knelt.

"No."

Then she corrected herself.

"Your dad made a bad choice. Then he tried to fix it."

Emily heard the distinction.

Children deserved truth without being handed adult shame.

The ledger documented thirty-seven trusts.

Fourteen children had been removed from parents or guardians using fraudulent evidence.

Most were later returned.

Six remained missing at the time Daniel wrote the list.

Charlotte and Noah were two.

The closed hospital children were three more.

One name remained.

MIA SANTOS, AGE 6.

Transfer date:

Eighteen months ago.

Same week Daniel died.

Current placement:

UNKNOWN.

Then Emily read Daniel's final note.

MIA SAW REED AT THE GARAGE.

The child had witnessed someone tampering with Daniel's car.

Reed had moved her afterward.

Sarah looked up.

"If we find Mia—"

"We may find the murder witness."

Then Catherine Vale asked to cooperate.

Her lawyer called federal prosecutors.

She knew where Mia had been sent.

Not Harbor.

Not Tennessee.

A private home in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

But Catherine wanted protection first.

Emily refused to promise.

Catherine gave the address anyway.

Police arrived that afternoon.

The house was empty.

On the kitchen table sat a coloring book.

A six-year-old girl's handwriting covered one page.

MR. REED SAID THE POLICE LADY WILL COME.

Under it was a picture.

A woman with brown hair.

A badge.

May you like

Emily.

Judge Reed had shown Mia her photograph.
