Chapter 11 - THE FIRE

Police reached the Grant house as smoke pushed from the basement windows.

Judge Reed was gone.

The hidden room was burning.

Firefighters contained the blaze before it reached the main floor.

Most paper evidence was destroyed.

The encrypted drive had already been removed by police.

Reed had failed.

Then Ethan noticed something.

"My dad's picture."

The family photograph he carried had been taken from the station evidence envelope during the chaos around Bell's arrest.

Why would Reed want it?

Emily looked at the back.

Nothing.

Ethan said, "Dad told me never to peel it."

Sarah stared.

"When did he say that?"

"The last time he went to work."

Emily carefully lifted the photo laminate.

A thin memory card slid out.

Daniel had hidden evidence in his son's family picture.

Ethan had carried it into the station without knowing.

The card contained video.

Daniel sat in his car.

"If this reaches Sarah, I'm sorry."

Sarah covered her mouth.

Daniel said Judge Reed's network was larger than one company.

But he had found the key account.

A pooled legal fund used to receive money taken from children's trusts.

Authorized signers:

Malcolm Reed.

Catherine Vale.

And one name nobody expected.

Daniel Grant.

Sarah went still.

Emily looked at her.

Daniel continued before the shock could settle.

"My signature was forged."

He showed comparisons.

Then:

"But I made the first mistake. I designed the audit software they used."

Years earlier, Daniel built a system to identify dormant or poorly supervised trusts for the state.

Reed repurposed it to find targets.

Daniel did not know at first.

When he learned, he stayed quiet for three months while gathering proof.

Three months in which other families were harmed.

He admitted it.

No self-cleaning confession.

Then Daniel said:

"If they kill me, Reed will try to turn my children into the last account."

The video ended with coordinates.

Sarah recognized the location.

Daniel's grave.

Emily stared.

"Why would he hide evidence there?"

May you like

Ethan whispered:

"Because Dad said nobody searches where everybody is already looking."
