Chapter 4 - CHARLOTTE IS ALIVE

Ryan refused to talk.
His lawyer arrived before lunch.
By then Emily had an emergency warrant for his phone.
The phone contained no Charlotte.
But it contained a photo taken six weeks earlier.
Charlotte Bennett, now twelve, standing beside a white van.
Alive.
Location metadata led to a rural property forty miles east of Nashville.
Harbor Ridge Youth Residence.
Licensed as a private therapeutic boarding program.
Emily read the ownership record.
Harbor Family Services.
Same company Daniel had investigated.
Sarah sat in the interview room.
"Why would children be hidden there?"
Emily answered carefully.
"We don't know yet."
Ethan did.
"They take kids whose parents have money."
Sarah turned.
"How do you know that?"
"Ryan said it on the phone."
Ethan had been listening from the stairs for months.
Ryan told someone:
If Sarah breaks before the hearing, the Grant kids transfer clean.
He also said:
Bennett money is almost exhausted.
Sarah covered her mouth.
Emily asked Ethan why he never told anyone.
"I told Mr. Ryan's doctor."
"What doctor?"
"Dr. Hale."
Sarah looked up.
Dr. Stephen Hale had been her court-appointed grief psychiatrist after Daniel died.
He was the one who recommended Ryan as a support volunteer.
The case widened.
Police searched Harbor Ridge that afternoon.
The director claimed Charlotte and Noah were not residents.
Then an officer found a locked dorm wing not listed on the floor plan.
Inside were six bedrooms.
Only one was occupied.
Charlotte Bennett sat on the floor reading a paperback.
She looked at the officers and said:
"Took you long enough."
Emily almost smiled.
"Where is Noah?"
Charlotte's face changed.
"They moved him yesterday."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
"Who moved him?"
Charlotte looked directly at Emily.
"The judge."
Emily frowned.
"What judge?"
Charlotte answered:
"Judge Malcolm Reed."
Sarah went pale when she heard the name.
May you like
Judge Reed had signed every emergency order in her case after Daniel died.
Including the order that sent her to Dr. Hale.
