Chapter 9 - CATHERINE VALE

Emily had known Catherine Vale since childhood.
Catherine sent birthday cards.
Paid for part of Emily's police academy tuition.
Spoke at domestic-violence fundraisers.
Emily wanted Daniel's note to be wrong.
It was not.
Financial records showed Catherine's foundation donated millions to Harbor Family Services.
Harbor then paid consulting fees to companies linked to Reed, Hale, and Bell.
Circular money, clean on paper and dirty in purpose.
Emily visited Catherine with federal agents.
Catherine received them in a bright office full of photographs of children she claimed to have helped.
"You should have called."
Emily answered, "You would have had time to delete things."
Catherine smiled sadly.
"You always were suspicious."
"Did you know Charlotte and Noah Bennett were hidden?"
Catherine's smile disappeared.
"Children in crisis are often moved."
"Under fake names?"
Silence.
Emily showed her Daniel's audit.
Catherine looked at his handwriting.
"He was reckless."
"Was he right?"
Catherine stood.
"You don't understand how these families work."
Emily almost laughed.
"Explain."
Catherine said wealthy guardians often fought over children like property.
Her foundation created stability.
Sometimes records had to be protected.
Sometimes parents had to be bypassed.
Emily heard the disease immediately.
Control disguised as rescue.
Then Sarah stepped forward.
"You drugged mothers and stole children."
Catherine looked at her.
"No. Men like Ryan did ugly work. I built systems."
Sarah's voice sharpened.
"Systems that paid them."
Federal agents seized Catherine's computers.
One encrypted calendar contained a meeting scheduled for that night.

Location:
Old Belle Meade children's hospital.
Closed for twelve years.
Reed was still in Nashville.
Emily prepared a tactical team.
Then Catherine said quietly:
"If you go there, children will die."
Everyone stopped.
"What children?"
Catherine realized she had said too much.
Emily leaned closer.
"How many?"
Catherine looked away.

And for the first time, the investigation was no longer only about Ethan, Lucy, Charlotte, and Noah.
There were children nobody had found yet.
