Chapter 14 - THE HEARING

The emergency custody hearing happened the next morning.
Not because Victor's petition succeeded.
Because it had already been filed.
She did not have to come.
She did anyway.
Victor's lawyers argued Marcus was violent.
They had evidence.
He hit Elena.
No lie.
Marcus did not deny it.
"Did you strike Ms. Ruiz while your infant daughter was present?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"I believed a false accusation before checking evidence."
"Do you consider that acceptable?"
"No."
"Do you believe fear justified it?"
"No."
Victor's lawyer shifted.
They expected excuses.
Then Elena testified.
Ethan did not coach her.
She described the pool.
Victoria's accusation.
Marcus's slap.
The camera.
The footage.
The deeper conspiracy.
Victor's lawyer asked, "Are you afraid of Marcus Vale?"
"That day? Yes."
The answer hurt.
"Today? I am cautious."
"Why stay employed?"
"I'm not."
Elena had resigned that morning.
She had sent the letter to HR.
He had not seen it.
The lawyer smiled.
"So you do not trust him."
Elena answered, "Trust is not a light switch."
The courtroom went quiet.
Then Brooks introduced Renner's project file.
M.V. likely to act before verification.
"Mr. Vale, your violence was predicted and exploited."
Marcus said, "Yes."
"And you understand that being manipulated does not erase responsibility?"
"Yes."
The judge denied Victor's guardianship request.
But she imposed conditions on Marcus too.
Mandatory anger intervention.
Independent child-safety review.
Temporary co-guardian for Sofia's trust voting rights.
Not family.
Not Marcus.
Not Victor.
A professional fiduciary.
Marcus agreed.
Good.
Then the court clerk brought Ethan a late filing.
A petition from another claimant.
Name:
Camila Ortiz.
Adriana's sister.
She was the original secondary guardian.
"I don't want the shares."
"Then why file?"
"Because Adriana left me one more instruction."
Camila handed the judge a sealed letter.

If Marcus ever becomes violent around Sofia, do not protect him from consequences.
Adriana had known him better than he wanted to admit.
