Chapter 16 - UNDER THE NURSERY

The nursery floor came up at midnight.

Sang to Sofia.

Changed diapers.

Held her while she slept.

Under the floorboards sat a steel box.

Renner had installed it during the renovation.

Approved by Victor.

Inside was the Orchid House ledger.

Names.

Payments.

Victims.

Settlements.

Blackmail.

Custody transfers.

Medical manipulation.

Twenty families.

Renner's system was bigger than Vale Holdings.

Judges.

Doctors.

Private investigators.

Wealth managers.

Board members.

"This could collapse half the network."

"Good."

Not just the Project Sofia profile.

A background report.

Mateo's school.

Her mother's immigration file.

Her father's death.

Her debt.

Her address.

Everything.

At the bottom:

High pressure tolerance unknown. Family leverage available.

Elena's face went blank.

Marcus wanted to apologize again.

Words would not fix surveillance.

Instead he asked, "What do you want done with this?"

"Every copy preserved."

"Done."

"And I want my family notified before any arrests."

"Done."

"And I don't want Vale lawyers burying names because they're embarrassing."

"You heard her."

The ledger also revealed Samuel's role.

He signed medical opinions.

Victor funded settlements.

Renner coordinated.

Celeste was one operative among many.

MERCER CHILD SERVICES.

Ethan went pale.

"That's the fiduciary firm appointed by the court today."

The independent trustee controlling Sofia's shares was connected to Orchid House.

Renner had planned for every outcome.

If Marcus lost custody, they gained control.

If Victor failed, the court appointed a "neutral" firm already compromised.

The appointment was frozen.

A new fiduciary chosen.

Then the nursery monitor activated.

Empty.

The secure nanny rushed in.

"I put her down ten minutes ago."

Window open.

Curtain moving.

No broken glass.

No alarm.

Aaron checked the service corridor.

One access badge used.

May you like

"Whose?"

"Camila Ortiz."
