Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO SMILED

Sofia spent the night under observation at St. Catherine's.
Her lungs were clear.
No aspiration pneumonia.
No neurological injury.
Lucky.
The word made Marcus sick.
Marcus had caused both.
She was awake.
She did not look at him.
"Elena."
"Mr. Vale."
Not Marcus.
Not sir.
A wall.
He deserved it.
"I saw the footage."
"Good."
"I'm sorry."
"No."
"Don't make that word do work you haven't done."
"I hit you."
"Yes."
"I was wrong."
"Yes."
"I thought—"
"That is the problem."
Her eyes sharpened.
"You thought your money, your fear, and Victoria's tears gave you permission to stop asking questions."
Marcus had no defense.
"Is Sofia okay?"
"Yes."
Some of the anger left her face.
"Good."
"You saved her."
"She was a baby in a pool."
"You still saved her."
Elena's voice went quiet.
"Then why did you hit me?"
That question stayed in the room.
Because Victoria accused first.
Because Elena was the maid.
Because he trusted class more than evidence.
Because fear made him violent.
"I don't know," he said.
"Figure it out before you ask me to forgive you."
Police arrested Victoria at the hospital.
She insisted the stroller rolled on its own.
Then detectives showed her the video.
She claimed she wanted to scare Elena.
Then she claimed she wanted to scare Marcus.
Then she claimed she panicked.
Detective Maya Brooks did not look impressed.
"What exactly were you hoping would happen when you pushed a baby into a pool?"
No answer.
Police searched the Vale estate.
A folder.
Sofia Vale - custody contingency.
Inside were draft guardianship petitions.
Psychological notes about Marcus.
Claims that he was unstable, violent, emotionally absent.
"They're fake."
"Some are."
"Some?"
One document was real.
A confidential therapy note.
The note described anger episodes.
Nightmares.
Fear of losing control.
Someone had stolen it.
Dr. Paul Renner.
His therapist.
Then Brooks showed him the signature at the bottom of the guardianship draft.
Proposed guardian:
Victoria Lang.
"She wasn't trying to marry me."
Brooks said, "Maybe marriage was never the main goal."
Co-petitioner:
May you like
Dr. Paul Renner.
"Your therapist was helping her."
