Chapter 15 - ADRIANA'S CONDITION

Adriana's letter was not a condemnation.
It was a boundary.
Marcus has a good heart. He also has anger he learned from Victor. If I am gone, do not let grief turn that anger into permission.
He handed her the letter.
"She knew."
"Yes."
"Did you?"
"I knew I got loud."
"That's not the same."
"No."
He had broken doors.
Punched walls.
Thrown a glass once.
Never hit Adriana.
He had told himself that meant he was safe.
Then he hit Elena.
Adriana's letter required the trust to remain under independent fiduciary control until Marcus completed treatment and a child-safety review.
Marcus signed without fighting.
Recorded an hour before the crash.
"Camila, if something happens, check Orchid House. Julian and Paul are moving money through women they think no one will believe."
Again.
Women no one would believe.
The system depended on status.
"Because official investigators closed Adriana's crash too quickly."
"Why Gabriel?"
"He doesn't quit."
Celeste had surfaced.
She wanted a deal.
"No immunity," Brooks said.
"Then no deal," Celeste replied.
Marcus listened through speaker.
Celeste sounded exhausted.
Not theatrical.
"Victoria Lang was murdered."
Julian had lied.
The real Victoria did not overdose.
Renner killed her after she threatened to expose Orchid House.
Celeste helped move the body.
"Where is Victoria?" Brooks asked.
Celeste gave coordinates.
An abandoned farm in Pennsylvania.
Then she said, "I can prove Renner ordered Adriana's hit."
"How?"
"I drove Julian's SUV."
Silence.
She admitted it.
She clipped Adriana's car.
Renner told her Adriana caused Renee's death and planned to ruin more women.
Celeste believed him.
"I wanted her scared."
"You forced her off the road."
"I know."
Celeste continued.
"Renner gave her something at the gas station before the crash."
The envelope.
"What?"
"Medication."
Adriana had been secretly taking anti-anxiety pills Renner prescribed.
He switched them for a stronger sedative.
She was impaired before Celeste hit her car.
"Why confess now?"
Celeste began crying.
"Because I pushed Sofia."
No one spoke.
"I looked at her in the water and realized Renner had turned me into the thing I thought I was avenging."
Then Celeste said, "I know where Paul keeps the original Orchid House ledger."
Brooks asked, "Where?"
May you like
Celeste answered.
"Under Sofia's nursery."
