Chapter 18 - THE LAST HOUSE

Paul Renner had taken Victor to Adriana's old shelter building.
Orchid House.
The place where the whole network began.
Federal agents surrounded it.
Marcus stayed outside with Sofia secured elsewhere.
Not as staff.
As a witness.
As someone who had chosen to be there.
"Marcus."
"What do you want?"
"Victor's confession."
"To what?"
"Everything."
Paul hated Victor almost as much as he hated the women he manipulated.
Victor had funded the trial cover-up.
Then refused to protect Paul when Renee died.
Paul decided to make the Vale family pay while profiting from them.
Grievance turned into industry.
Marcus asked, "Why Sofia?"
"Because children are the fastest way to reveal adults."
He hated the truth inside that sentence.
"You revealed yourself exactly as predicted."
"I did."
Silence.
Paul expected denial.
"I hit Elena."
"I made your plan easier."
Paul's voice lost rhythm.
"But you don't own what I do next."
That was the point.
Agents used the distraction.
Gunfire.
Glass breaking.
Victor shouted.
Paul reached the roof.
Cornered.
Brooks shouted for him to drop it.
"You think a trial fixes this?"
"No," Brooks answered.
"It just lets everyone see the records."
Shot through the leg.
Alive.
"I suppose you think you won."
"No."
"Elena saved Sofia. Brooks did her job. Camila kept asking questions. Gabriel recorded evidence. Women you dismissed kept this family from burying more people."
"You forgot one."
"Who?"
"You."
"No."
"You stopped hitting first and thinking second."
Marcus absorbed that.
It was not absolution.
It was change.
Then Brooks approached with one final piece of evidence.
Paul's laptop contained a scheduled release.
Thousands of Orchid House files would go public in six hours.
Ethan asked, "Can we stop it?"
"Don't."
"Remove victim names where legally required. Protect children. Then release the rest."
Victor shouted from the stretcher.
May you like
"You'll destroy Vale Holdings."
"Then it survives smaller or it doesn't survive."
