Chapter 1 - THE RED WINE"On your knees, Grace. Someone has to clean up after people who matter."

Victoria Ashford tipped a glass of red wine down the front of Grace Ellis's cream blouse. The violinist stopped playing.

Grace stood beside the charity auction display, shaking. She had chased missing payments. Now three hundred guests watched a development director treat her like something on the carpet.

"I said clean it," Victoria repeated, holding out a napkin.

"You spilled it on me."

"And you have a job because people like me donate."

Grace could have told them everything. She knew where the missing grant money had gone, or at least where the trail began. But the envelope in her bag held copied invoices, not yet the final proof, and Victoria had already called her unstable.

Victoria lifted her hand. "Don't you dare talk back."

A man caught her wrist before it reached Grace's face.

"That's enough."

Adrián Mercer, founder of the foundation and owner of the hotel, stood between them. He did not raise his voice. That made every guest lean closer.

Victoria switched on her public smile. "Adrián, this employee has been making accusations—"

"I've seen the accusations. I've also seen the accounts."

He walked to the stage and touched the control for the projection screen. A list of grants appeared, recipient names hidden. One line had been highlighted: EASTLINE ADVISORY — $480,000. There were five more just like it.

"Two million four hundred thousand dollars," Adrián said. "Money intended for young people who needed housing, meals, and training. It did not reach them."

Victoria pointed at Grace. "She handles the payments! She did this!"

Grace lifted her eyes. For the first time that evening she looked entirely steady.

Adrián raised the microphone again. "Grace came to me with evidence thirteen days ago. An independent team has been examining it ever since."

"You set me up," Victoria whispered.

"No," Grace said. "I asked you to stop."

Adrián changed the slide. A digital authorization appeared beneath a payment request. He stared at the name and lost his breath.

It was his own.

"Grace," he said quietly, "why does this transfer carry my signature?"

And Victoria began to smile again.
