Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE MACHINEThe consultant compared two contracts. Adrián's signature looked identical on both, down to a tiny break in the last letter.

"A genuine handwritten signature changes," the consultant said. "This doesn't. It's an image pasted onto different documents."

He would not declare forgery from a screen alone. The originals, access history, and witness accounts still mattered. But the identical mark told them where to look.

Grace remembered something from February: Victoria had asked to borrow the boardroom laptop during a donor call because hers was dead. Adrián had logged in to show a draft grant letter and left for another meeting. Peter remained behind.

"Find the boardroom computer," Grace said.

IT specialist Milo Park pulled the device's access record. A removable drive had been attached that afternoon. He could not tell from the log what was copied. What he could prove was that the signature image had been opened immediately before the connection.

Peter sat through the questioning with folded hands. "She said she needed the founder's signature for the invitation."

"Then why did you approve a property guarantee?" Adrián demanded.

"I didn't. Not knowingly."

Grace wanted to shout. Instead she asked for the audit trail, transaction by transaction. The password resets had occurred after hours, when only Peter and Victoria had been in the office. Her own account had been accessed remotely from a terminal registered to the Development suite.

"Your identity was used as camouflage," Milo said.

Outside the conference room, a donor representative called Adrián. Her company had pledged a million dollars for youth housing, but the commitment would be withdrawn unless the foundation produced an independent accounting within forty-eight hours.

"If you make this public, your career is finished," the woman warned Grace when she joined the call.

"It's already public," Grace said. "The only question is whether we're going to tell the whole truth."

A security alert interrupted them. Peter's master finance token had just authenticated a new wire request from a computer inside the locked foundation office.
