Chapter 7 - THE SIDE DOORThey did not confront Victoria in the dark. Adrián called Paula, and Paula called the police nonemergency line and the shelter's landlord attorney. A guard was assigned to Rosebridge's entrances while the center's staff kept residents away from the argument.

At 9:16 p.m., a black sedan parked across the street. Victoria stepped out with Nolan and a locksmith. The side door did not open. Omar, there as a witness and not as muscle, recorded the arrival from public property.

"We manage this building," Nolan shouted through the intercom.

"You can speak with counsel tomorrow," Paula replied. "There are children inside."

Victoria turned her face toward the camera. "Grace is turning a misunderstanding into a spectacle."

"You brought the locksmith," Paula said.

The sedan left when the police arrived. No arrest, no dramatic chase. Only a report number and a warning that they would need court orders to settle access rights. Grace hated how small that victory felt.

At midnight the investigators opened Celia's files. One email asked her to change the gala's seating chart so Grace would be stationed beside Victoria. Another told her to retrieve a "compromising employee clip" from a videographer. A third, copied to Peter Voss, listed a special closing meeting on Monday for Hawthorn Capital.

The attachment was a purchase offer for the Rosebridge building. Its price assumed the center would be vacant within thirty days.

"They weren't just diverting grants," Grace said. "They were trying to make Rosebridge fail."

Adrián nodded once. "And our name made the project sound legitimate."

Then he read the final page. It identified a guarantor whose personal assets would cover the deal if the property remained occupied.

ADRIÁN MERCER.
