Chapter 12 - THE MONDAY HEARINGThe courtroom smelled of old paper and coffee. Paula sat beside Grace with a binder thick enough to bruise a knee. A dozen residents had asked to attend; Paula encouraged them to remain at school and promised an update afterward.

The judge examined the rent notices and asked Hawthorn's lawyer why the landlord had refused documented requests to negotiate. The lawyer said his client wanted only payment.

"Your client also owns the company that received the money intended to fund that payment," counsel for Rosebridge answered. "We request time to establish how these obligations arose."

No one won the building that morning. The judge continued the matter, set a hearing on the records, and encouraged both sides to propose a temporary occupancy agreement.

On the steps, a reporter pushed a microphone toward her. "Did you assault Victoria Ashford?"

"No. She tried to hit me, and Mr. Mercer stopped her. I gave security a statement."

"Did you steal from the foundation?"

"I reported missing funds. The independent review can address the evidence."

She stopped before her words became a headline.

Across the street Victoria leaned against a black car. She waited until reporters turned away, then approached Grace.

"This is becoming tedious," she said. "I can make your problems disappear."

She offered a folded agreement: $160,000 and a favorable reference if Grace withdrew her allegations and never spoke publicly about the foundation.

"You could pay your mother's rent for years," Victoria added.

Grace kept her hands at her sides. "Send it to my lawyer."

Victoria leaned closer. "You're protecting a man who let this happen."

"I'm protecting the people your invoices forgot."

Grace watched her leave. Then she read the last line of the settlement proposal. It required her to certify that every disputed transfer had been personally authorized by Adrián.

Victoria wasn't only buying silence. She was trying to lock one final lie into writing.
