Chapter 18 - UNDER THE LIGHTSThe room was crowded with donors, employees, shelter staff, and reporters. For a moment Grace smelled the wine from that first terrible night, though her blouse had long since been washed.

Adrián took the microphone. "We failed the people who trusted us. A former officer and two business partners used our weak controls to divert $2.4 million. I failed to respond quickly enough to warning signs."
Victoria rose. "You have no proof I authorized anything. Grace made this up because I disciplined her."
Miriam displayed only the evidence cleared for public release: verified invoices, conflicts of interest, the independent auditor's conclusions, and the full gala recording. Private client information stayed hidden.
"Grace did not invent this," Adrián said. "She reported it when doing so placed her own job and safety at risk."
Victoria pointed at Celia. "Then ask that liar why she helped!"
Celia stood beside her lawyer. "Because you told me to change the files. And because I finally stopped listening."
The room went quiet.
Grace spoke next, her voice plain. "I'm not the story. Rosebridge is. So are the employees nobody believed and the young people whose beds were billed but never delivered. Fix that first."
Adrián turned back to the audience. "Beginning today, no officer can approve payments without independent verification. The whistleblower channel reports outside management. Trustees must disclose business interests. Every restricted grant will have a public accounting."
Victoria laughed, but it sounded frightened. "You're destroying your own name for a clerk."
"No," he said into the microphone. "Grace was the first person in this room to protect my father's foundation when the rest of us were protecting its reputation."
Then he announced Victoria's removal was final, subject to the appropriate legal process, and that the complete evidence had been turned over to investigators.
As security escorted her out, Victoria stopped smiling.

In the back row, Paula raised her hand. "That's a start," she said. "When do the next rent payments arrive?"
