Chapter 1 - THE HAND SHE STOPPED

Victoria Langford raised her hand toward the elderly woman in the wheelchair.

Emma Carter caught her wrist before it landed.

A hundred conversations died beneath the crystal chandeliers. Champagne stopped halfway to people's mouths. Across the Vale Foundation ballroom, someone dropped a fork.

"Take your hands off me," Victoria hissed.

"Then step away from her."

Victoria's diamond bracelet dug into Emma's fingers. "Do you have any idea who I am?"

"I know what you were about to do."

Emma was twenty-six, wearing a borrowed black uniform and shoes with cardboard tucked beneath the insoles. Her father lay in a hospital bed with bills she couldn't begin to pay. Victoria could end her catering job with one phone call.

Victoria leaned closer. "You will never work in this city again."

The old woman reached for Emma's sleeve. Her hand trembled, but her eyes were sharp, frightened, and unmistakably clear.

"It's okay," Emma told her. "I'm right here."

"Security!" Victoria shouted. "This girl attacked me!"

Two guards started forward. Emma let go but stood between Victoria and the wheelchair.

"If protecting her costs me my job," Emma said, loud enough for the nearest tables to hear, "then I guess it costs me my job."

A man's voice cut through the room. "What's going on?"

Nathaniel Vale emerged from behind the marble columns. Everyone knew the billionaire's face from magazine covers. Emma knew him only as the man whose foundation name was printed across tonight's napkins.

He walked past Victoria without looking at her, knelt beside the wheelchair, and took the older woman's shaking hand.

"Mother."

Emma's stomach dropped.

Eleanor Vale tried to speak. The word came slowly, painfully, as if she were dragging it through a locked door.

"Forty... seven."

Nathaniel bent closer. "Forty-seven what?"

His mother looked directly at Emma.

May you like

"Patients," she whispered. "Ask... about... the patients."

Victoria's smile disappeared.
