Chapter 19 - A BED BESIDE THE WINDOW

The surgeon met Emma outside the operating room after midnight. Frank had developed a complication from an earlier injury that couldn't safely wait.

"We were able to address the immediate problem," the doctor said. "He's stable, but the next day matters."

Emma sank into a chair and pressed her hands to her face. The story had become headlines and hearings, but the person who mattered most to her was still behind a hospital door.

Nathaniel sat two seats away. He didn't offer a check or a speech.

"You can go," Emma told him.

"I know."

"Why aren't you?"

"Because I should have shown up for someone long before tonight. I can show up now."

When visiting hours resumed, Frank opened his eyes and found Emma beside him.

"Did you get the number?" he whispered.

"Every one of them."

"Good." His mouth twitched. "Your mom would've scared those crooks worse than any lawyer."

Emma laughed through her tears. "She would've scared you for hiding it."

"Fair."

Over the following weeks, independent auditors identified the diverted funds and began contacting the affected families. Prosecutors later filed fraud and conspiracy charges against Victoria and Rusk; the case would move through court, with evidence tested and defenses heard. Harborwell's contracts were terminated under legal supervision.

Nathaniel stepped back from overseeing the patient fund while trustees rebuilt its rules. Hospital bills were reviewed one by one; emergency care could not wait for the criminal trial.

One morning, Emma received a letter from the newly appointed board. It offered her a salaried role as an independent patient advocate, with no requirement to soften her public criticism.
