Chapter 13 - THE OFFER IN THE ENVELOPE

By noon Saturday, Emma had lost her shifts. Mr. Bell left a short voicemail: "The venue doesn't want trouble. I'm sorry."

The news story called her an opportunist. A television commentator wondered whether the billionaire was financing her accusations. Emma read the comments until the words blurred.

"Stop," Frank said when she showed him. "They don't know you."

"They think they do."

An envelope arrived at the nurses' station with her name typed in capital letters. Inside was a note naming a downtown restaurant and a cashier's check for two hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Victoria met Emma in a private booth, dressed in cream and gold, as if cruelty were simply another expensive accessory.

"Your father needs care," Victoria said. "You need stability. Take the money and sign a statement saying you misunderstood what happened at the gala."

Emma kept the check on the table. "And the forty-seven families?"

"Unfortunate administrative delays. Nothing criminal."

"Then why pay me to lie?"

Victoria's smile was thin. "Because Nathaniel gets emotional about his mother. And because you need to learn the difference between courage and making yourself homeless."

Emma stood. "I know the difference between help and hush money."

Victoria caught her coat sleeve. "Your father used to know when to keep his mouth shut."

Emma pulled free. "He taught me the opposite."

Outside, rain washed over the street. Emma photographed the check, the note, and the envelope without spending a dollar. Dana Brooks later told her to preserve all three for investigators.

Then Emma noticed the check's issuing account: HARBORWELL MEDICAL SERVICES.

The money meant to pay patients' bills was now being offered to buy her silence.
