Chapter 5 - THE BILLIONAIRE AT ROOM 618

Nathaniel Vale arrived at St. Catherine's at 1:14 a.m., without an entourage, a tie, or any idea how to explain himself.

Emma met him in the waiting area. "Your foundation was supposed to help people like my father. Instead, someone forged my name to move him."

Nathaniel took the paper she offered. His face hardened when he saw the Harborwell logo.

"That vendor operates our patient assistance program."

"Then you need to look at who they actually help."

"I will."

"People say that when they want someone to stop talking."

He accepted the hit. "You're right. So tell me where to start."

Emma showed him the photo of the blue drawer. Nathaniel recognized the room immediately: his mother's private office on the third floor of Vale House. The office had been closed since Eleanor's stroke.

"Victoria says Mom can't handle visitors or decisions," he admitted.

"Your mother told a ballroom full of people they don't let her talk. Did you believe her?"

He looked away. "I wanted to."

"That's not an answer."

Nathaniel called his head of security, Owen Rusk. "Open my mother's office. Nobody enters until I get there."

Rusk answered too quickly. "Sir, the office is being cleared tonight on Mrs. Langford's instructions."

Nathaniel stood. "I gave no such order."

"She's acting under the care directive."

"Cancel it."

A long silence followed.

"Mr. Vale," Rusk said, "you should understand that the staff already found a blue folder."

May you like

"Where is it?"

"That's the problem, sir. Someone has taken it."
