Chapter 18 - NO MORE QUIET ROOMS

Nathaniel called the bank's fraud department on a recorded corporate line. Priya transmitted the court order and flagged the pending eight-million-dollar transfer. The bank confirmed a temporary hold while it reviewed the disputed authorization.
Victoria rose so quickly her chair scraped the floor. "You can't freeze a legitimate charity partnership because an old woman had a bad day."
"Don't call my mother that," Nathaniel said.
"Then stop letting her ruin everything we built."
Eleanor took her time typing. YOU BUILT IT ON OTHER PEOPLE'S PAIN.
The board voted to suspend the transfer, place Harborwell's accounts under independent review, and remove Victoria from any role controlling Mercy Bridge funds pending investigation. It was not a verdict. It was the first time anyone had stopped her.
Victoria pushed toward the exit, where two investigators asked her to stay and answer questions. Her attorney stepped forward and requested a formal interview instead. No one dragged her away for the cameras; the investigators collected documents and gave her counsel notice to preserve records.
Emma stood by the window, watching rain stream down the glass. It should have felt like a victory. Instead she pictured Mateo's unused braces and the dozens of families who had borrowed money because someone had called a stolen payment complete.
Nathaniel joined her. "Thank you for stopping Victoria that night."
"I didn't stop all this. Your mother did. My dad did. People just finally listened."
"Will you help us tell the families?"
"Only if you tell them the parts that make you look bad, too."
"All of it," he said.

Then Jo called from St. Catherine's. Frank's condition had worsened suddenly, and the doctors were taking him back into surgery.
Emma was already running before the call ended.
