Chapter 12 - The Video He Couldn't Explain

"How does Linda know about Mrs. Ellis?" Nora asked.
"I don't know. But Daniel knew before I did."
I forwarded his message to Camille and told Nora I wanted to make a report. We spent the afternoon giving a clear account of the chair incident, the attempted medical paperwork, and Linda's unwanted access to our home. An officer took notes and explained what information investigators would need. I didn't demand a dramatic arrest. I wanted a record and a way to stay safe.
Camille called while we were still in the parking lot.
"Mrs. Ellis agreed to provide the original file," she said. "The clinic has also acknowledged our request to preserve its hallway footage."
"Is that enough?"
"It's evidence. It means people can examine what happened instead of guessing."
At Nora's apartment, I watched the witness video on a larger screen. Daniel's face was visible after Linda pulled the chair. He looked straight at her. Not at the floor. Not at somebody else. Her.
I paused the video. "He saw."
Nora sat beside me. "You already knew he did."
"I wanted to be wrong."
Daniel called that evening. I answered on speaker because I didn't trust myself to hear another explanation alone.
"Emily, Mom's upset," he began.
"Of course she is."
"People are talking."
"A stranger came back to tell the truth because she was worried about my baby. That's what people are doing."
He went quiet.
"I watched the video," I said. "You saw her move the chair."
"Yes."
One word. It took me a moment to process it.
"Why did you tell me it was a mistake?"
"Because she said it was. And I wanted it to be."
"You wanted to believe her more than you wanted to protect us."
He began to cry. I had spent years folding myself around his discomfort. For once, I let the silence belong to him.
"There's something else," Daniel finally said. "I saved a message from Mom because it scared me."
May you like
"When?"
"Right after the appointment."
