Chapter 18 - No One Speaks for Me

Dr. Patel explained what the tracing showed and what they were doing. They helped me change position, checked me again, and kept a close watch. The numbers gradually settled. Nobody promised there couldn't be another problem. They told me what they knew, what they didn't, and what would happen next.

That mattered more than I could explain.

"Do I get a say?" I asked between contractions.

Dr. Patel met my eyes. "You always do. We'll talk you through each decision."

Nora squeezed my hand. "Hear that?"

I nodded.

Daniel sent another message. Security called to confirm I wasn't trying to bring anyone up. I told them it's Emily's decision. I'm downstairs, not at the door.

For once, he had done the right thing without asking for credit. I didn't reply. I was busy bringing our daughter into the world.

"You can," Nora said, brushing hair from my forehead. "And if you need help, you can ask for it."

I thought about all the times I'd been told I was making trouble by asking for ordinary respect. Here, asking brought help instead of a lecture.

As evening approached, the room changed. The doctor said it was time to push. I held Nora's hand and focused on the next breath, the next instruction, the next small piece of strength I could find.

"You're doing great," the nurse said. "One more."

I pushed until everything inside me seemed to go still.

For one suspended second, there was no cry.

May you like

I lifted my head, terrified to ask.

Then Dr. Patel reached toward the baby, and I couldn't read her face.
