Chapter 13 - His Mother's Own Words

Daniel sent the recording without another word.

Linda's voice came through bright and irritated.

"You let Emily embarrass me in front of everybody. I just wanted her to move. She acts like that seat is a throne. And don't tell me she's hurt. The doctor checked her."

A pause, then Daniel's voice: "Mom, she could've fallen on the baby."

"But she didn't. You have got to stop rewarding her whenever she makes a scene."

There it was. No apology, only annoyance that her plan had backfired.

I listened twice, then handed the phone back to Nora.

"He saved it because it scared him," I said. "And he still asked me to apologize."

Nora didn't try to soften that truth.

Camille advised me to preserve the recording in its original form and document future contact. She couldn't promise what a court would do, but she said the evidence gave us a stronger foundation for asking Linda to stay away.

I texted Daniel: Do not share my address, appointments, or medical information with your mother. Do not contact the clinic for me. If you want to discuss our daughter, do it in writing.

He replied almost immediately: I understand.

Then another message: I didn't tell her where you're staying.

I read it twice.

"Nora," I said, "does Linda know your building?"

"She knows the neighborhood. Not the unit."

Twenty minutes later the intercom buzzed. Nora glanced at the small screen beside the door.

Linda was standing in the lobby holding a pink gift bag.

"I've brought something for my granddaughter," she said through the speaker, as if she had been invited.

Nora didn't unlock anything. "You need to leave."

Linda smiled at the camera. "Tell Emily I'm not going away."

Then she looked directly into the lens and lifted a piece of paper.

It was a photograph of Nora's front door.
