Chapter 15 - THE FAKE VIDEO

The defense’s new video looked convincing for exactly twelve minutes.

In their version, Leo turned toward Vanessa just before he fell. Her hand appeared to move as if she were reaching to catch him.

The defense called it the complete file.

Reporters called it a bombshell.

Marcus called it garbage.

He and the state’s forensic expert examined it overnight.

By morning, they found duplicated frames, altered timestamps, and digital smoothing around Vanessa’s hand.

The file had been created two weeks after Leo fell.

On a laptop registered to Simon Vale.

Police arrested him before lunch.

That arrest broke the last wall around Vanessa.

Facing conspiracy and evidence-tampering charges, Vale asked for a deal.

He admitted Vanessa hired him months before the engagement to create a legal path toward temporary control of Leo’s trust.

He insisted he never expected violence.

Then the prosecutor displayed his email.

An incident will accelerate the necessity argument.

Vale stared at it.

“I meant a documented safety problem.”

“Such as a child falling down stairs?”

Silence.

The prosecutor showed another message.

Vanessa: Anna catches him every time.

Vale: Then use that.

The courtroom went dead quiet.

I stopped breathing.

That line proved something even Derek had only described.

They had discussed my presence.

My reaction.

My love for Leo.

They had turned it into a variable.

Richard gripped the bench so hard his knuckles whitened.

Vale tried to explain.

“I thought she meant staged near-misses. I never approved harm.”

The prosecutor asked, “You approved using a toddler to manufacture legal instability?”

Vale looked down.

There was no good answer.

That afternoon, prosecutors rested.

The defense called Vanessa.

Against her attorney’s advice, she testified.

For an hour she described herself as misunderstood.

Then the prosecutor asked one simple question.

“Did you put your hand on Leo Hale’s back?”

Vanessa said, “Yes.”

“Did he fall immediately afterward?”

“Yes.”

“Did you choose that location because of the camera angle?”

Her face changed.

And in that half-second pause, everyone in the courtroom already knew the answer.
