Chapter 17 - CLAIRE’S TRUTH

The report showed Claire’s brake line had been intentionally weakened before the crash.
Pete’s fingerprints matched the protected fitting he admitted touching.
Vanessa’s payment tied her to the act.
Maybe she expected a warning light.
Maybe she expected a roadside scare.
Maybe she told herself nobody would die.
None of that changed the fact that she gambled with Claire’s life.
Claire lost.
Richard sat alone in the kitchen after reading the report.
I put coffee beside him.
He did not touch it.
“She wrote that she still loved me.”
“Yes.”
“I spent three years angry because I thought she was leaving.”
“She needed space.”
“I should have listened before she had to ask for it.”
There was nothing useful to say to that.
So I sat quietly.
Later Leo came in carrying blue chalk from the patio.
He drew on a paper mat.
Four stick figures.
Daddy.
Leo.
Anna.
And one figure far away.
“Who’s that?” Richard asked.
“Vessa.”
Leo drew a heavy line between her and the others.
“No come.”
Richard swallowed.
“No. She’s not coming.”
Vanessa later entered a separate plea in the Claire case rather than face another trial.
The legal ending arrived in pieces.
Healing did too.
Richard started grief counseling.
I started therapy after realizing I could not hear a child run upstairs without my body locking.
Leo worked with a therapist who used toys instead of questions.
For weeks he refused to climb anything.
Then Richard sold the house.
The new place was smaller.
Warmer.
One story.
When Leo first walked inside, he ran from the front door to the kitchen without asking to be carried.
Richard watched him go.
“I should have done this sooner.”
I shook my head.
“You couldn’t know what this house would become.”
He looked at me.
“No. But I can decide what happens next.”
Then he handed me the keys to the new place.
Not because I lived there.
May you like
Because my contract now gave me something Vanessa had tried to erase.
Clear authority to protect Leo.
