Chapter 8 - THE WEDDING PLAN

Derek said Leo was never supposed to die on the stairs.

That did not make anyone feel better.

“The plan was to make Anna look negligent,” he said. “Vanessa knew she was downstairs.”

My stomach twisted.

My love for Leo had been part of Vanessa’s safety calculation.

She expected me to save him after she pushed him.

If I did, she got an “incident.”

If I failed, Leo paid the price.

“What happened after Anna was fired?” Ortiz asked.

Derek hesitated.

“The wedding.”

It was twenty-three days away.

After the ceremony, Richard would be asked to sign foundation documents on a tablet. Hidden among them was confirmation of Vanessa’s forged authority over Leo.

Then a private bartender would serve Richard one specific drink.

“What was in it?” Richard asked.

“Something to make you collapse. Not kill you.”

Richard laughed once, without humor.

Police arrested the bartender that afternoon.

He claimed Vanessa told him Richard suffered anxiety and needed medication in his drink.

Investigators searched wedding supplies at Vanessa’s apartment.

Inside a pouch labeled RING CLEANING KIT were two unmarked vials.

One contained a strong sedative.

The other could sharply lower blood pressure.

David explained what would happen next.

Richard collapses in front of two hundred witnesses.

He goes to the hospital.

Vanessa produces the forged documents.

Anna is already gone.

Leo goes home with his new stepmother.

“And the trust?” I asked.

David answered quietly.

“She gains temporary control while Richard is incapacitated.”

Ortiz’s phone rang.

She listened, then frowned.

Vanessa had been released pending the broader charging decision, with strict no-contact orders.

Richard exploded.

“She pushed my son!”

“We’re building the full case.”

Minutes later, my phone showed a breaking-news alert.

VANESSA COLE: “I AM THE VICTIM OF A WEALTHY FAMILY COVER-UP.”

Beneath the headline was a photograph of me.

The caption called me Richard Hale’s “obsessive nanny.”

Vanessa had lost control of the house.

So she had started fighting for control of the story.
