Chapter 16 - THE VERDICT

Vanessa tried to recover.

“I meant the camera angle made it hard to see what really happened.”

The prosecutor did not raise her voice.

“What really happened?”

“He slipped.”

“You testified that your hand touched him.”

“I was trying to steady him.”

“You also said, on a recorded proffer, ‘It wasn’t supposed to show my hand.’”

Vanessa looked at the jury.

Bad decision.

They were already watching her differently.

The prosecutor moved on to the forged guardianship papers.

The sedatives.

The guesthouse.

The passport application.

Claire’s letter.

The payments to Pete.

By the time Vanessa stepped down, the story she had built around herself was gone.

The jury deliberated for six hours.

Richard sat with his elbows on his knees.

I watched the courtroom clock.

At 4:38, the bailiff returned.

Everyone stood.

Vanessa was convicted on the major counts tied to child endangerment, fraud, conspiracy, attempted evidence tampering, and the planned incapacitation of Richard.

Separate charges remained in Claire’s crash case.

Vanessa did not cry.

Richard did.

Quietly.

A guilty verdict did not bring Claire back.

It did not erase Leo’s fall.

It did not make Richard forgive himself.

It only named what had happened.

Outside the courthouse, reporters shouted.

I ignored them.

On the steps, Richard handed me an envelope.

“What’s this?”

“A new employment agreement.”

“Today?”

“It has fixed hours, independent authority to report safety concerns, counseling coverage, and a clause saying you can tell me I’m being an idiot without being fired.”

I looked at him.

“That last part is not legal language.”

“David improved it.”

I almost smiled.

Then Richard became serious.

“I’m selling the house.”

My expression changed.

“Why?”

He looked toward the street.

“Leo points at the stairs every morning.”

My chest hurt.

“I want him somewhere that doesn’t remember Vanessa.”

Before I could answer, Richard’s phone rang.

Ortiz.

He listened silently.

Then closed his eyes.

The final forensic report from Claire’s SUV was complete.

It could not prove Vanessa intended to kill her.

But it proved the brake failure had been deliberate.
