Chapter 4 - THE BLUE FOLDER

The blue folder was stamped HALE FAMILY TRUST.

Richard opened it in his office while Ortiz photographed every page.

At page twelve, he stopped.

“I never signed this.”

The document named Vanessa temporary guardian of Leo and acting trustee of Leo’s inheritance if Richard became medically incapacitated.

His signature sat at the bottom.

“That isn’t mine.”

Vanessa stood in the doorway under guard.

“You signed estate updates in August.”

“I signed tax amendments.”

“It was included.”

Richard’s voice dropped. “I would remember giving you control of my son.”

A second document gave Vanessa medical authority over Leo.

Another signature.

Another forgery.

Richard called his attorney, David Shaw.

Caleb, meanwhile, admitted Vanessa had asked him two weeks earlier how to erase security footage.

Then he showed Ortiz the texts.

David arrived before sunset, reviewed the papers, and said the signatures appeared copied from older filings.

“When did Vanessa last have your laptop alone?” he asked.

Richard looked at me.

We both remembered the night she claimed she was ordering dinner on his phone.

David searched Richard’s deleted email.

One subject line stopped us all.

URGENT — GUARDIANSHIP ACTIVATION AFTER INCIDENT.

The email had been sent three days before Leo fell.

Richard opened it.

The message discussed what paperwork would become effective after a “serious household safety event.”

Vanessa started talking fast.

“It’s legal planning. That’s all.”

David kept scrolling.

A second message appeared.

REMOVE CAREGIVER BEFORE ACTIVATION.

My name was in the attachment.

Anna Reyes.

Richard looked at Vanessa.

“What did Anna have to do with your plan?”

May you like

She said nothing.

That silence frightened me more than the lies.
