Chapter 11 - THE SECOND PHONE

Clara had told me her brother was irresponsible.

Apparently that part was true.

What she had not told me was that she had been funding him for years.

Brandon sent me copies of loan agreements Clara had hidden from me. Nico had borrowed against a failed restaurant, then a development deal, then a cryptocurrency scheme I barely understood.

Clara had co-signed nearly $600,000 in private debt.

When lenders started calling, Nico created Blue Mesa.

The fake pregnancy became leverage.

Not emotional leverage alone. Financial leverage.

A baby gave Clara a reason to push for estate changes, joint management rights, cash reserves, and a new property supposedly purchased for “family security.”

By evening, police had taken a report about the forged authorization and missing corporate documents. My attorney froze the deed.

Clara still had not answered.

Then Sofia asked if she could show me “Mommy Clara’s quiet phone.”

I stared at her.

“The what?”

“She has another phone in the laundry room. She said it’s for grown-up work.”

We found it inside an empty detergent box on the top shelf.

This one required a passcode.

Sofia watched me try birthdays.

“Try baby day,” she said.

“What baby day?”

“The day she said the baby was coming.”

January 14.

The phone opened.

There were no family photos. No contacts saved by full names. Only message threads and travel apps.

A conversation with Nico contained a line that made my hands go numb.

Nico: January 10 works better. Four days before the fake due date. Emergency, hospital, no visitors, then loss.

Clara: Mateo will fall apart.

Nico: That’s the point. He won’t look at paperwork for weeks.

I scrolled farther.

Clara: After the transfer, I want out.

Nico: Then book it.

Attached was a flight reservation.

San Antonio to Lisbon.

One-way.

Passenger: Clara Vega Alvarez.

Departure date: January 16.
