Chapter 15 - WHAT MY MOTHER KNEW

I called my mother at midnight.

She arrived twenty minutes later wearing slippers under a long coat.

The moment she saw Clara at the kitchen island, she understood.

“Tell him,” Clara said.

Mom’s face tightened.

I felt something inside me sink.

“You knew?”

“Not all of it.”

“How much?”

She sat slowly.

“Three months ago, I came by and saw Clara without the belly through the laundry-room window.”

I stared at her.

“And you said nothing?”

“She told me she had lost the baby but was having a breakdown. She begged me for time to tell you herself.”

“For three months?”

“No. I gave her forty-eight hours.”

Clara interrupted. “Then I showed her another test.”

Mom looked ashamed.

“She said she was pregnant again.”

I laughed bitterly. “And you believed her?”

“I wanted to.”

There it was. The same trap I had fallen into.

Wanting something true so badly that evidence became rude.

Mom pulled an envelope from her coat.

“I stopped believing her two weeks later. I hired a private accountant to review the household vendors because the nursery bills looked insane.”

She handed me the report.

Blue Mesa appeared on page one.

“Why didn’t you give this to me?”

“I was going to tonight.”

“Tonight?”

“At the party. Before Sofia said anything.”

Clara shook her head. “That’s a lie.”

Mom stood. “I have spent three months hating myself for not speaking sooner. Do not make me carry your lie too.”

The room went quiet.

Then Mom turned to me.

“The accountant found something beyond Blue Mesa.”

She pointed to an appendix.

A payment of $42,000 had gone to a private school outside Dallas.

Enrollment deposit.

Student name: Sofia Alvarez.

Start date: February 1.

Boarding status: residential.

I looked at Clara.

Sofia’s fear had never been imaginary.

Clara had actually made the reservation.
