Chapter 13 - WHAT CLARA WAS REALLY BUYING

I read the January Plan standing beneath a flickering fluorescent light.
It was not a medical plan.
It was theater.
Call Mateo at 2:10 a.m.
Say ambulance is already coming.
Do not allow him inside treatment area.
Use private entrance.
At 4:30 a.m., report fetal loss.
By noon, have Brandon deliver temporary authority papers “to reduce stress.”
I stopped reading.
Camila took the folder from my hands.
“How could she write this?”
I did not know.
At the bottom of the unit, we found receipts for a furnished condominium in Austin paid six months in advance. New furniture. New identification documents under Clara’s maiden name. A safe-deposit box rental.
She had been building another life while asking me what color to paint a nursery.
Then the detective found something that complicated everything.
A hospital discharge paper from March.
Clara had not lied about the first positive pregnancy.
She had been pregnant briefly.
She had lost it very early.
I sat on a cardboard box.
For the first time since the party, anger loosened its grip long enough for grief to enter.
She had lost a baby and told nobody.
That pain was real.
Camila sat beside me.
“You can feel sorry for what happened to her without excusing what she did after.”
I nodded, but the distinction hurt.
The storage-unit manager approached with another envelope. Clara had asked him to give it to me if I came.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Mateo, I know what this looks like. Nico took my grief and turned it into a plan. I kept going because I was afraid you would look at Sofia, then look at me, and realize you never needed me. I did terrible things. But I did not take the money. Nico did.
At the bottom she had written one final line.
If you want proof, check the spare tire in my car.
The detective looked at me.
“Do you know where her car is?”
May you like
I did.
It was parked at the airport.
