Chapter 16 - THE FAMILY MEETING

By morning, there was no version of this that stayed private.
Not after the party. Not after forty witnesses. Not after forged documents and a boarding-school deposit.
Clara asked for one family meeting before the lawyers took over.
I agreed for one reason: my parents deserved to hear the truth from her, not from rumors.
Sofia did not attend.
At my parents’ dining table, Clara sat where she had sat on Christmas, birthdays, Sunday lunches, and the night we announced our fake future.
Her mother Teresa came too.
Teresa cried before Clara spoke.
“I lost the baby in March,” Clara began. “I panicked. I was ashamed. Then the lie got bigger.”
My father asked, “And the money?”
“Nico pushed that.”
Camila snapped, “You signed things.”
“I know.”
“You threatened Sofia.”
“I never threatened her.”
I placed the boarding-school invoice on the table.
Clara’s mouth closed.
Her mother stared at it.
“What is that?”
Clara whispered, “A backup plan.”
“For what?” I asked.
“If Sofia kept interfering.”
The room changed. Whatever sympathy had survived the miscarriage disappeared.
Teresa covered her mouth.
“You were going to send that child away?”
“It wasn’t forever.”
“She is four.”
Clara started crying again.
I had seen those tears work on me for years.
This time I simply waited.
“I was afraid Mateo would always choose Sofia first,” she said.
I answered, “She is my daughter. I am supposed to choose her when she needs me.”
Clara looked at me as if I had confirmed her worst fear.
That expression taught me something awful.
She had not been competing with another woman.
She had been competing with a child.
My father pushed back from the table.
Then Teresa said, very quietly, “Clara, tell them about the first fake test.”
Clara looked at her mother.
May you like
I felt my pulse change.
“The first what?”
